THE GENOCIDE DATABASE

Genocide discourse is grounded in theoretical, legal, historical, and sociological concepts and features many academic debates – What is the legal definition of genocide? How is it different from cultural and political genocides? What are the elements of the crime of genocide? Search here for discussions of these questions and others.

The universal fight against genocide is facilitated by legal instruments and the work of international institutions. Find here information about the 1948 Genocide Convention, the United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and Responsibility to Protect, the International Criminal Court, and more.

The 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide was not successful in eradicating genocide. Find here overviews of 20th century and 21st century case studies of genocides, including debated cases.

THE CENTER IN THE MEDIA

The word “genocide” derives from the Greek word “genos” (race) and the Latin verb “cide” (to kill), but this vile crime against humanity wasn’t reserved for the past. It still happens today in many countries.

The Helms School of Government was pleased to welcome back Dr. Hilly Moodrick-Even Khen, Senior Lecturer of Public International Law at Ariel University and Chair of the University’s Center for the Research and Study of Genocide.

INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION

With the goal to raise awareness about genocide and prevent it, the center collaborates with scholars, universities and organizations across the globe.
